Worship Talks – Can a Non ‘Worship’ Song be Worshipful?
Hello, my name is Brent, and I have a confession to make: I have secular music on my iPod. *Phew*, it feels good to get that off my chest. As silly as it sounds, this is something that I struggled with for a while after dedicating my life to Christ. I felt that in order to fully immerse myself in Christ, I needed to create an environment for myself where music that was NOT about Jesus didn’t exist. I threw out all my non-Christian CD’s and deleted all those pesky MP3′s as well. It was a load off my conscience, and my hard drive. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t regret that intense stage of my life, I think every step of the journey has brought me closer and closer to learning who Christ is, and who He wants me to be. I think sometimes as Christians we have the tendency to feel the need to distance ourselves from everything and everyone that isn’t more Christ-like than we are. If that were truly what God wanted, then who among us could grow? I don’t know that I would have come to Christ if it weren’t for people loving and pouring into me when I was very far from Him. In my time writing this blog, there have been moments when I really wanted to share a song, but it wasn’t a ‘worship’ song, so I hesitated. There have certainly been times in my life where God has spoken to me through songs that don’t mention His name, and I would guess that I’m not the only one. Music has an amazing power that few other art forms carry, there’s something in the way God wired us that responds to melody. So what do you think? Has anyone else out there ‘purged’ their music collection before? I guess the big question I have, is can a non ‘worship’ song be worshipful??
