Relevant – How to Respond When Christians Make Art Thats Just Bad

Over on Relevant Magazine’s website, Tyler Huckabee has written a great article dealing with our criticism of Christian Art, on how we respond, and a little perspective. It’s a great read and I hope you’ll take the time to check out his thoughts. Here’s a brief taste of the author’s take on Christian Art BEFORE he tried to make some himself:

Christian art was too simplistic, too willfully ignorant of the world’s suffering. It was too eager for happy endings and warm sentiment, too ready to resolve any conflict with a Bible verse and a Sinner’s Prayer. Christian art was clichéd and airbrushed, afraid to show sin in all its distressing aesthetic glory. It was black and white. It was intolerant. It was ethnocentric. It was one-dimensional. It was cheesy. It was prone to misguided attempts at being vaguely “edgy.” It was childish. It was boring. And, above all, a lot of it was just plain stupid.

It becomes so easy to criticize art, and believe me I have done it myself. We preface Christian Artwork, music, movies etc. to our friends as “Hey, this is a Christian Song” as if to warn them that it won’t be up to the world’s standards. Head on over to the full article to get the author’s full firsthand experience after trying to make Christian Art himself.
